Last Game
Earthquakes 3, Houston Dynamo 0; May 25, 2014; Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
Jamaican midfielder Khari Stephenson recorded his first career brace to lead the Earthquakes to a 3-0 win against the Houston Dynamo in front of a sold-out crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium. Stephenson scored his first off an indirect free kick and then converted a penalty in the second half. Kittitian midfielder Atiba Harris accounted for San Jose’s last goal, giving the Earthquakes their largest margin of victory since a 4-1 win against the Colorado Rapids on Oct. 6, 2012. San Jose broke through in the 38th minute after Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall picked up a back-pass from teammate David Horst. The result was an indirect free kick for the Earthquakes. Shea Salinas tapped the ball back to Stephenson, who blasted his shot around the wall and into the net for his first of two goals. The assist was Salinas’ fifth of the season, tied with Seattle’s Obafemi Martins for tops in the league. Stephenson doubled his haul early in the second half after Steven Lenhart drew a penalty. Stephenson coolly placed his shot to Hall’s right for his first multi-goal game as a professional. Atiba Harris capped the scoring in the 70th minute. Jordan Stewart sent a long pass that caught Hall off his line with Harris charging toward goal. The two met at the edge of the 18-yard box with Harris winning the aerial battle, only to see his header draw the post. However, he was first to the rebound and tapped in his first goal as a member of the Earthquakes.

Last Game vs. FC Dallas
Earthquakes 2, FC Dallas 1; May 10, 2014; Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
The Earthquakes played the entire second half down a man, but held on for a 2-1 win against FC Dallas at a sold out Buck Shaw Stadium. Cato scored his first goal of the season in the 25th minute. Jon Busch sent a long pass downfield that Clarence Goodson flicked past the FC Dallas backline and right into the path of Cato. The flying Trinidadian collected the ball and slotted his shot past goalkeeper Raul Fernandez. The assists were milestones for both Goodson and Busch – the first for Goodson in an Earthquakes uniform and the first for Busch in his 14-year MLS career. After Shea Salinas was sent off at the end of the first half for a hard challenge, San Jose organized at the break and came out with a resilient shape that held up for the win. The Earthquakes posted what turned into the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute. Sam Cronin bent a teasing free kick into the mix where FC Dallas substitute David Texeira deflected the ball into the net while trying to shield Chris Wondolowski from the play. FC Dallas pulled one back three minutes later on a spectacular free kick from the top of the box by Brazilian left back Michel. However, the Earthquakes’ defense regrouped and kept three points with a tenacious group effort. Busch ended the night with four saves and faced a total of 20 shots, five of which were on target.

He has the highest goals-per-game average since the beginning of 2013 at 0.81. Salinas Adds to Team Lead in Assists
Quakes midfielder Shea Salinas picked up his fifth assist of the season in Sunday’s 3-0 win against the Houston Dynamo at Buck Shaw Stadium. Djalo, Lenhart Return to Lineup
The Earthquakes saw the return of Yannick Djalo and Steven Lenhart during Sunday’s 3-0 romp against the Houston Dynamo at Buck Shaw Stadium. The duo started up top after missing time due to injuries. Djalo sat out San Jose’s last three games after coming off early in the club’s 3-2 loss at Vancouver on May 3. Meanwhile, Lenhart returned to the field for the first time since spraining his left medial collateral ligament on March 29 against the New England Revolution. Djalo went 73 minutes before Billy Schuler entered the match for the Portugese speedster and Lenhart played 80 minutes before subbing off for Alan Gordon.

What’s more, the Earthquakes did it without Chris Wondolowski on the field, marking the club’s largest margin of victory without the star striker since Aug. 16, 2008 – a 4-0 win against the New England Revolution.

Busch Ties Garlick on MLS Wins List
Sunday’s 3-0 win marked the 107th of Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch’s career, tying him with Scott Garlick for No. 6 on the MLS all-time list.

CAMP NOTES
BRANDON GONZALES

IN BEAST MODE FOR JAMES DEGALE SHOWDOWN
Photos By Brett Ostrowski / Gary Shaw Productions

HAYWARD California -- Gary Shaw Productions and Antonio Leonard Promotions undefeated Super-Middleweight contender, Brandon "Flawless" Gonzales (18-0-1, 12 KOs) ranked IBF # 3, is in beast mode for his upcoming showdown with IBF # 4 James DeGale (18-1, 12 KOs) for the IBF mandatory position.  The 12-round bout is set to take place at Wembley Stadium in London, United Kingdom on May 31, 2014, on the undercard ofCarl Froch (32-2, 23 KOs) vs. George Groves (19-1, 15 KOs).

Gonzales on the current status of his career...
"My promoters Gary Shaw and Antonio Leonard, along with my manager James Prince are doing a great job with my career.  I'm in a big fight and I can't ask for anything more.  Now it's up to me to bring home the victory.  I'm very happy with the current standing of my career."

Gonzales on training with Virgil Hunter...
"Virgil and I got a great game plan for this fight.  We see some weaknesses in Degale's defense that I'll be taking advantage of.  Sparring is almost wrapped up and I got good work with elite level guys.  I've been training extremely hard for this fight.  My mind is in beast mode and I can't wait to get in the ring.

Gonzales speaks on traveling overseas to fight in hostile territory...
"I know my back is against the wall traveling to DeGale's home turf and getting a decision will be difficult, but I'm confident that the judges will be fair.  With 80,000 people rooting against me, I'm going to be extra motivated to silence the crowd.  I'll be looking to end the fight early but if I need to go all the way then I'm prepared to go the distance. "

Gonzales comments on his match up with James DeGale...
"I'm anticipating a very strategic approach from DeGale but that won't matter because I'm going to be dictating the pace and setting the tone.  He's accomplished winning an Olympic Gold Medal so we know he has great boxing skills that got him to this point in the pros.  So with that being said, I'll have to implement my game plan and make adjustments as the fight goes on."

Gonzales addresses his hunger to be a world champion...
"This is the biggest fight of my career.  A win puts me in the mandatory position with the IBF.  I know if I come out on top, I'll most likely be fighting the winner of Froch vs. Groves for the IBF Middleweight title.  I'm a hungry fighter and nothing is going to stop me, I'm on a mission to be the best.  My dream of becoming a world champion is so close I can taste it."

Last Game
Earthquakes 0, Seattle Sounders FC 1; May 17, 2014; CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Wash.
The Earthquakes were an Obafemi Martins golazo away from taking a road point against Seattle Sounders FC, ultimately falling 1-0 after the Nigerian international scored the game-winner in highlight reel fashion on Saturday at CenturyLink Field. Dressing just 16 players – two less than the maximum allotted on gamedays – due to injuries, international duty and suspension, San Jose was forced into a makeshift lineup. That lineup included an MLS debut for Billy Schuler, a new position for Jordan Stewart as left-center back and Shaun Francis’ first game in nearly two months due to a strained hamstring. Martins’ wünder strike had San Jose on its heels eight minutes in with the fleet-footed striker chipping a shot over Jon Busch. Martins was charging toward a pass sent via Gonzalo Pineda and somehow directed a waist-high ball on target while just a couple yards from the endline. The Earthquakes played without regulars Chris Wondolowski (international duty), Clarence Goodson (international duty), Victor Bernardez (suspension), Alan Gordon (groin strain), Steven Lenhart (rehabbing from a sprained MCL), Yannick Djalo (groin tightness) and Andy Gorlitz (torn ACL). Due to the absences, the team’s bench included just five substitutes with an average of 20 career appearances each. By comparison, Seattle’s bench had 327 more career appearances than San Jose’s and an average of 61 games per player.
