Wondolowski Bags a Brace, but Earthquakes Rally Falls Short in 3-2 Loss at Vancouver
VANCOUVER, B.C. – Chris Wondolowski scored twice to rally the San Jose Earthquakes to within one goal of their hosts, but Vancouver Whitecaps FC ultimately took the win 3-2 at a sold-out BC Place on Saturday.

Vancouver jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes. Kekuta Manneh opened the scoring with a chipped shot in the 10th minute. The Gambian striker hit the post with his initial effort, but one-timed a shot off the other post and in with his next touch.

Morales scored the next two for Whitecaps FC, the first of which came from the penalty spot after Victor Bernardez was whistled for a foul on Darren Mattocks in the area. Morales doubled his haul one minute later, hammering a shot from just outside the box.

The Earthquakes pulled one back moments before halftime, slotting a penalty past Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted. Alan Gordon earned the penalty after Whitecaps FC defender Jay DeMerit took him down in the box on an aerial challenge.

Wondolowski pulled another one back during second-half stoppage time. The United States Men’s National Teamer collected a deflected cross and sent a left-footed shot past Ousted for his fifth goal of the season.

Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch made his 1,000th career save during the second half, denying former Santa Clara University striker Erik Hurtado from point-blank range on a Vancouver counter attack.

San Jose returns to action on Wednesday, May 7 against the Colorado Rapids at Buck Shaw Stadium, presented by Supercuts. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF. The Earthquakes and Supercuts are giving away 2,500 foam fingers as a giveaway item to fans.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH MARK WATSON
Thoughts on the match:
“As soon as Yannick [Djalo] went down, they scored the first goal. It was just 10 minutes where we couldn’t cope with them, and then they got three goals. At that point you’re thinking you’re in big trouble. But, in the end, I was proud of our guys and the way they came back.”

On Chris Wondolowsi:
“Wondo kept on plugging. He got two at the end of it. You know Wondo will always compete and always give everything he has, and tonight he did exactly that. He had two goals and probably could have had another.”

On defense:
“I felt [their speed] was the main issue. They were really quick up front, and that’s something we talked about going into the game. We had to limit their space, and limit the number of times they would run at our back four. Their three goals mostly came from those situations.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FORWARD CHRIS WONDOLOWSKI

On the game:
“We didn’t come out with a good mindset. Down 3-0 against a quality team like Vancouver – that’s just too big of a hole to come out of. We just didn’t do things right tonight.”

On Whitecaps FC:
“They did a great job. I think we gave them too much space. They had two shots from outside, one hit the post and the rebound went in. The other, I think it was Morales who hit it from distance and that was a great finish. Darren Mattocks did a good job of drawing that penalty – we obviously just didn’t do well enough.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER SHEA SALINAS

On the match:
“It’s frustrating to lose like that. Obviously, you never want to lose a match. Going down 3-0 isn’t ideal either. We’ve got to look forward to Wednesday and start better against Colorado to get those three points.”

On positives from tonight:
“There are positives. We always have a fighting attitude, and we never quit. But, at the same time, we know we have that in us and we don’t have to rely on it. It’s frustrating, like I said. We have to learn from this and we’ve got to get three points on Wednesday.”
