Barrett's Late Goal Gives Earthquakes 1-1 Draw with LA Galaxy at Stanford Stadium

STANFORD, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes scored another late goal to draw 1-1 against the LA Galaxy Saturday night at Stanford Stadium in front of a California Clasico-record 50,816 fans. Forward Chad Barrett's header in the 90th minute, assisted by Shea Salinas, kept the Quakes undefeated at home this season.

The Earthquakes were forced to shuffle the lineup early in the match with center back and captain Víctor Bernárdez departing due to an injury just eight-plus minutes in.

San Jose nearly opened scoring in the 11th minute. Midfielder Matías Pérez García broke away from several Galaxy defenders, sprinted downfield and slotted the ball to midfielder Alberto Quintero, who took a hard shot that was saved by LA goalkeeper Brian Rowe.

The Galaxy got on the scoreboard in the 69th minute. Midfielder Steven Gerrard sent a long cross to Giovani dos Santos, who headed the ball just past Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham and into the far corner of the net.

Eleven minutes later, defender Kofi Sarkodie chipped a pass to Barrett in the penalty box and his firm header smacked the woodwork.

In the 90th minute, the Earthquakes tied the game after an extended onslaught in front of goal. Salinas' free kick from outside the box found Barrett's head and slipped past the Galaxy's goalkeeper.

The Quakes head back on the road for their first and only meeting with the Chicago Fire on Friday, July 1 at Toyota Park. The match kicks off at 5:00 p.m. PT live on UniMas, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

•   San Jose is now 5-4-7 on the season and an undefeated 5-0-3 at home.

•   The Earthquakes are now 20-29-14 all-time against the LA Galaxy, including a 15-10-8 record at home.

•   San Jose is now 5-3-2 all-time at Stanford Stadium.

•   The Quakes are now 3-1-1 in five matches against LA at Stanford Stadium.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH DOMINIC KINNEAR

On Shea Salinas' performance: 

"He gained us some territory similar to last week. He served us a good ball for the goal and made an impact. You want guys to come on and make a difference. I think he's done that two weeks in a row which is good."

On losing Víctor Bernárdez early to injury: 

"You just have to deal with it. Looking down the bench we don't really have a center back per se. Fatai [Alashe] is the next one in line. We just thought of what's the best combination to get our midfield in sync with the backline. Fatai was there last year too, which made it easy for us. It was just the thought of who do we put in for him."

On if the result was fair: 

"They came out and had good chances in the second half. I thought it was a soft goal to give up; the ball was in the air a long time. Saying that I thought we had good chances. We were good for a goal."

On Chad Barrett's play: 

"He was a threat. We started crossing the ball a little bit more and we became more dangerous. Obviously his play when he hit the crossbar in the first half was a good play by him. You hope that he would get one more chance. Luckily for us it fell to him and he took it well. That's two games in a row and hopefully that's a sign of good things to come."

On Chad Barrett's late goal: 

"Chad had been getting on the end of crosses all night and was just due for a goal - I think he hit the crossbar twice and that one, he goes up and put it far post, which was a great finish. It was unfortunate we didn't come away with the win, but it was a good late goal."

On the impact to the team of Víctor Bernárdez leaving early with an injury: 

"That's a huge blow. Especially when they have a tough physical forward like Alan Gordon up there. We expected Victor to kind of nullify him and going out early on was a big blow. But Fatai [Alashe] stepped in there and did a great job. He was physical all night, and took a few blows to the face and kept playing. So give him a lot of props, he played well coming in there."

On whether 1-1 was a fair result: 

"No, I think we played really well tonight. I think we had the better of the chances and probably the better of the possession as well and I think we should have won this game. We need to start winning."

On his late goal: 

"Tonight it was just one of those kind of things where we left it a little bit too late. But for me it was more personally gratifying since I had a terrible miss probably about 15 minutes before."

On his mentality after his earlier miss: 

"Score a goal. Make up for that miss. That's when we really started to go, the crowd really started to respond to us. If I score that goal and the last 20 minutes we go in, I think we'd have more momentum going forward, and it really urges us to go for that win instead of just the last seven, eight minutes where that whole stoppage time was pretty much killed by the red card and the injuries, so I thought more stoppage time probably should have been added. But if it was another five minutes I think we would have had them."

On his second goal in two games and whether he's getting more comfortable: 

"I feel great. The header that I missed I was a little bit in shock. I think everybody was. It's one of those ones on the training ground where you're just kind of embarrassed and that's exactly what I was - I was embarrassed that I missed it. The woodwork in the first half, that would have been a great goal if it went in, but I can't miss those. I told Kofi [Sarkodie] if he puts it on my head I'll score and he did exactly that and so to be able to get the goal is great, but it's just a little bit of comfort where I thought I could have won it for us today."
