Earthquakes’ Comeback Falls Short in 2-1 Defeat against Sporting KC

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the San Jose Earthquakes nearly made their second comeback of the week on the road, but their second half rally came up just short as they fell 2-1 to Sporting Kansas City at Livestrong Sporting Park on Sunday. Simon Dawkins scored in the 72nd minute and despite holding 61 percent of the possession in the second half, the Quakes could not find the equalizer.

Sporting KC came out strong in the first half, scoring just five minutes into the game. Kei Kamara found C.J. Sapong with a cross to the back post and Sapong powered a volley past Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch.

Just minutes before halftime, Kamara was involved again, as he rose high to drive home a header from eight yards out. Michael Harrington picked out Kamara with a cross and he finished to make it 2-0 heading into intermission.

San Jose’s strong second half culminated in Dawkins’ goal with under 20 minutes to go. Ramiro Corrales knocked a header down to Dawkins, who took a touch around a defender, before curling a shot to the far post over a diving Jimmy Nielsen.

Despite some late pressure, San Jose could not replicate their late comeback from Wednesday night in Los Angeles against the Galaxy. The Quakes scored three times in the final 15 minutes to beat the Galaxy 3-2 at The Home Depot Center on May 23.

The Earthquakes return to play in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, May 29 against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the North American Soccer League. “You have to give Kansas City credit. They came out flying in the first half and put us under a lot of pressure. They dominated the first half and we were a bit lucky to be down only 2-0, but I think this game was really a tale of two halves. We got our legs a little bit under us and created some good chances and could have equalized in the end.”

“Despite a difficult first half, we still had that fight in us and we didn’t feel that we were out of it. That is a great trait to have and helped us in this difficult stretch. We have scored a lot of late goals this year and we really felt like we were going to get something out of the game at the end. “When Simon (Dawkins) scored, I thought that we were going to come back and get a result again. They have some big defenders though and they did a good job of seeing the game out at the end. We had them on their heels during the second half a bit, but it was too little too late.

It is important to have a strong mentality at all times and we definitely have that. We didn’t quite get back in it today, but our character will get us results in the future.”

            Por el Columbus Crew comenzó Olman Vargas, delantero costarricense y estaban en la banca los refuerzos hispanos, Bernardo Añor, mediocampista venezolano y el delantero venezolano, Emilio Rentería.

            El partido terminó empatado 1X1 después de una excelente actuación durante los 90 minutos por parte de ambos oncenos. La asistencia al partido a la jornada 11 del campeonato de la MLS que se realizó en el estadio Buck Shaw de Santa Clara fue de 10.265 fanáticos.

On Monday, May 14, the Giants will celebrate the 19th Annual "Until There's a Cure" Night sponsored by Gilead Sciences & the Giants Community Fund. In 1994, the Giants became the first-ever professional sports team to host an HIV/AIDS awareness game. Since then, the Giants, the Giants Community Fund and the Until There’s A Cure Foundation have repeated the effort, generating more than $1.5 million for HIV and AIDS education and care/service organizations and international AIDS research. This year pitcher Matt Cain is wearing the Until There’s A Cure® bracelet in support of finding a cure.

Tuesday, May 15, is Say Hey Tuesday as CSN Bay Area will host Chronicle Live from Willie Mays Plaza. Fans are invited to come out early and watch their favorite sports analysts.

Saturday, May 19, the first 20,000 fans will receive a Giants Fedora presented by Genentech. On this day, the Giants and Genentech will raise awareness for their season-long Strike Out Cancer program which is dedicated to empowering and encouraging people affected by cancer to seek out information about treatments, support networks and educational resources. Giants Make 4 Roster Moves Prior to Today’s Game Phoenix, AZ – Prior to today’s contest, the San Francisco Giants have made the following roster moves: LHP Jeremy Affedlt has been activated from the 15-day disabled list (right knee sprain), LHP Travis Blackley has been designated for assignment, IF Conor Gillaspie has been optioned to triple-A Fresno and IF Charlie Culberson has been recalled from triple-A Fresno. IF Charlie Culberson will be looking to make his Major League debut as he was batting .284 (40-for-141) with 11 doubles, two triples, five home runs and 24 RBI in 36 games all at second base with triple-A Fresno this season. Culberson, 23-years-old, shared the team lead with 24 RBI as his 11 doubles were second-most on the club. The 6-1, 200 pound middle infielder was batting primarily from the fifth spot in the Grizzlies’ lineup as he was hitting .276 (8-for-29) with runners in scoring position and 2 outs. Culberson, who was a sandwich pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, will wear number 33.

BOGOTA, Colombia. - Este miércoles 04 de abril se desplaza la escuadra Atletas con Porvenir a territorio europeo con el objetivo de aclimatarse y adaptarse al cambio de horario de la ciudad de Rótterdam – Holanda, donde el próximo domingo 15 de abril buscarán registro estándar A (2 horas, 15 minutos) el cual los clasifica a los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres y una nueva marca nacional en los 42 kilómetros, 195 metros.

El antioqueño Juan Carlos Cardona encabeza la nomina de Porvenir, con la ventaja de ser el único maratonista colombiano en la rama masculina clasificado a la olimpiada del verano londinense; cupo conseguido desde el año pasado en la más antigua de las maratones, la Maratón de Boston, cuando finalizó en la casilla duodécima con un guarismo de 2 horas, 12 minutos y 17 segundos. “Rótterdam tiene un recorrido completamente llano, es una buena época del año para correr, el clima está fresco, que es cuando se logran las marcas. Este y todos los años van atletas que corren a ritmo de record del mundo. La expectativa es la mejor” aseguró Cardona previo a su viaje.

Por su parte Jasón Gutiérrez, Diego Colorado y William Naranjo lucharán por los dos cupos restantes que la Federación Colombiana de Atletismo y el Comité Olímpico Nacional tienen reservados para la cita ecuménica en la prueba de maratón. El otro gran objetivo del equipo Porvenir en Rótterdam es la marca nacional de la distancia que posee Carlos Mario Grisales desde el 15 de abril de 1996 en la Maratón de Boston con registro de 2 horas, 11 minutos y 17 segundos; marca que este 15 de abril cumplirá 16 años de vigencia.

El Maratón de Rótterdam es considerado uno de los más veloces y prestigiosos del circuito mundial. Por ello, varios países lo eligieron como sede para la evaluación final de sus maratonistas hacia los Juegos Olímpicos. La última incursión de una delegación colombiana en la maratón de la capital holandesa, data del año 2008, cuando 5 fondistas buscaron su tiquete a los Juegos Olímpicos de Beijing, tres de ellos representantes de la escuadra Porvenir. Using more than 45 artifacts either from the Museum’s unparalleled collection of almost 40,000 pieces of baseball history or on loan, FENtennial examines the history, memories and impossible dreams that have thrived at Fenway Park and thrilled Boston baseball fans.

“FENtennial will explore the history of Fenway Park and how this beloved American ball yard has served as a connecting point for generations of fans,” said Jeff Idelson, President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. “This exhibit will bring forward countless memories for all baseball fans as we pay tribute to one of the National Pastime’s great cathedrals.”

Through breathtaking photos and the timeless words of those who worked and played at Fenway Park, FENtennial traces the story of Fenway’s beginnings through its iconic features like the Green Monster, the Pesky Pole and Williamsburg. Generations of future Hall of Famers called Fenway home, leaving legacies of excellence imprinted in the sod and dirt that make up one of the game’s most hallowed playing surfaces.

Artifacts ranging from Ted Williams’ 1960 home jersey to Curt Schilling’s blood-stained sock from the 2004 World Series will transport Museum visitors to the iconic moments in time that made – and make – Fenway unique. As part of the exhibit, visitors will be able to share their memories of Fenway Park at the Museum in Cooperstown or at baseballhall.org – with the responses added to the Hall of Fame’s archive.

Located on Main Street in the heart of picturesque Cooperstown, New York, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is one of the country’s major tourist destinations and is surely the best-known sports shrine in the world. Opening its doors for the first time on June 12, 1939, the Hall of Fame has stood as the definitive repository of the game’s treasures and as a symbol of the most profound individual honor bestowed on an athlete. It is every fan’s "Field of Dreams," with its stories, legends and magic to be passed on from generation to generation.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is open seven days a week year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The Museum observes regular hours of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. from Labor Day until Memorial Day Weekend. From Memorial Day Weekend through the day before Labor Day, the Museum observes summer hours of 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Ticket prices are $19.50 for adults (13 and over), $12 for seniors (65 and over) and for those holding current memberships in the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and AMVets organizations, and $7 for juniors (ages 7-12). Members are always admitted free of charge and there is no charge for children 6 years of age or younger.
