KDOW and KTRB to air games in English; La Kaliente to broadcast all games in Spanish
SAN JOSE, California - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today their English and Spanish language radio broadcast partners for the 2011 season. KZSF 1370 AM “La Kaliente” will increase their broadcasts to cover all games in Spanish after airing only home games in 2010. The Quakes will split time between KDOW 1220 AM and KTRB 860 AM in English. The Earthquakes local television broadcast schedule will be announced later this week.
“We continue to grow our broadcast network every season,” said Earthquakes President David Kaval. “We are happy to work with KDOW again and look forward to our first season on KTRB. One of our goals in the offseason was to increase our presence in Spanish and, for just the second time in team history, we will offer every game to our Spanish-language listeners.”
In English, the Quakes will air 19 games on KTRB 860 AM and 13 games on KDOW 1220 AM. KTRB is also the home of the Oakland Athletics. The Quakes will be on KDOW for the third straight season.
XTRA Sports 860 AM is a 50,000-watts station based in San Francisco, providing quality game coverage for Earthquake fans in all local counties, with a signal comparable to any station in the Bay Area.
As the only 24-hour business news format station in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1220 KDOW offers a dynamic body of content that is both timely and relevant to today’s uncertain economic conditions. John Shrader will serve as the primary radio voice of the Earthquakes in 2011 and will be joined in the booth by Jim Kozimor for games that also air on television. Shrader has been the voice of the Earthquakes (Clash) either on radio or television since 1996. He has been a broadcaster in the Bay Area for over 30 years. He currently teaches journalism and media at San Jose State University. Prior to his current duties, he spent 15 years at all-sports station KNBR 680 AM, where he hosted talk shows and covered the San Francisco 49ers. Shrader broadcast the 2002 & 2003 MLS All-Star Games and the 2002 and 2003 MLS Cup Finals on the radio.
The Earthquakes return to KZSF for the second straight season and will air all games on the station for the first time. The Quakes aired home games only in Spanish on “La Kaliente” during the 2004, 2005 and 2010 seasons. KZSF is a locally owned Spanish language station that hosts daily sports talk shows and also plays a wide variety of popular music.
“We are excited to broadcast all the San Jose Earthquakes games this season,” KZSF Owner and General Manager Carlos Duharte said. “We are proud to partner with an organization like the Earthquakes. We have a great relationship with the team and we are glad to provide Earthquakes soccer to the local Hispanic community.”
Carlos Cesar Rivera returns for his fourth consecutive season as the voice of the Quakes and his seventh overall. A native of El Salvador, Rivera hosts a popular sports talk show from 5–7 p.m. PT Monday through Friday on 1370 AM that covers MLS, Mexican League soccer, as well as many other sports. Rivera, who has worked in radio in the Bay Area for over 30 years, has also called games for the San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants and the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks in his career.
