Earthquakes Fall 2-1 on Late Goal by Revolution
The San Jose Earthquakes gave
up a last minute goal to the New England Revolution to lose 2-1 at a
rain-soaked Buck Shaw Stadium Saturday night. Chris Wondolowski scored his
second goal of the season in the defeat. The loss snapped the Quakes 21-game
unbeaten streak at Buck Shaw Stadium in all competitions.
The Revolution jumped ahead in
the 35th minute through an own goal. After a ball slipped past Quakes
goalkeeper Jon Busch, Victor Bernardez recovered to clear the ball, but he
slipped and redirected it into the Quakes goal.
San Jose came out flying in
the second half and found the equalizer as Wondolowski scored for the second
straight match at home. After a Cordell Cato cross was deflected, Wondolowski
jumped on the loose ball and slammed it past Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth
into the far post.
Lee Nguyen grabbed the winner
for the Revolution on a counter attack in the final seconds. Nguyen took a pass
from Scott Caldwell and broke into the San Jose box, before firing a near-post
shot past a diving Busch.
The Earthquakes have a bye
next weekend, before playing the Columbus Crew on Sunday, April 13 at Buck Shaw
Stadium, presented by Jack in the Box. The match kicks off at 12 noon PT and
will air live on Comcast SportsNet Plus, UniMas, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

On loss:
“It was disappointing because
we got ourselves back in the match. I thought we played a poor first half. We
came out the second half, scored the equalizer and had all the momentum at one
point. They caught us on the counter attack and won the game. It was very
disappointing.”
On defensive effort:
“I just don’t think we played
well and we were second best at everything in the first half. We had a good
chat at halftime and the guys knew they had to start the second half with more
energy, more fight and determination. This team is built to go for the win and
that starts with our back line. The effort they gave in the second half, having
played together for the first time all year, was what I envision this unit to
be all year. Just couldn’t get the win tonight.”

On having home-unbeaten streak
snapped:
“That was a difficult way to
break the streak. Not sure if it was a foul and they quickly played the ball
through. I was hoping the referee caught that. It left me out of position with
a lot of space to cover. I’m not sure if it was tired legs, but I needed to be
better on that play; it was a bad play by me. We flirted with disaster all
night. There were four or five plays where we could have surrendered a goal. We
are usually the ones scoring the late goal, but we finally gave one up late.
That’s just the style we play. It’s all or nothing.”
On playing conditions:
“It was terrible out there.
You saw guys slipping and falling. The ball took some funny hops; I think that
was clear on [New England] first goal. Defender misplayed it and it sped to the
goal line and we just couldn’t clear it. All in all, however, it was a poor
first half that lost us this game. One of the worst defensive performances I
have seen in any half.”

On club debut:
“It felt good. I subbed on
late in the match at a point where we were risking everything to get the win.
As I was warming up, I heard a lot of emotion from the stands. It was emotional
while I ran on and I wanted to give back to them by helping us win.
Unfortunately, tonight was not that night.”
On first MLS experience:
“The style of play was very
organized. I felt [New England] was accurate with their passes and really did
not turn the ball over. I had a good couple of weeks of training. Every day in
training I saw the talent this league has in my teammates, which prepared me
for tonight. Now we have a week off and we can prepare ourselves for our next
match here at home, a match we need to win.”
