Earthquakes Fall 1-0 in Season Opener Against Real Salt Lake

SANTA CLARA, California -- The San Jose Earthquakes fell in their season opener 1-0 against Real Salt Lake on a rain-drenched field Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kyle Beckerman scored the game winner in the 63rd minute, blasting a shot form 25 yards out off the left post
and in.

The Earthquakes made a fervent push to find an equalizer and had several chances to score, but ultimately fell short. Recent Tottenham Hotspur loan acquisition Simon Dawkins made his San Jose debut and nearly created a goal after darting up the middle and sliding a pass that found Chris Wondolowski in the area. The 2010 Budweiser Golden Boot winner pounded a shot on goal, but Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando got a hand to the shot while diving to his right.

San Jose will hit the road for its next match, traveling to play FC Dallas at Pizza Hut Park on Saturday, March 26 at 6 p.m. PT.

QUOTES

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH FRANK YALLOP

On the result:

“With the chances we had, we have to score at least one goal. I thought we dominated play most of the game. We felt on top of the game. I was very happy with the performance, but obviously not the result.”

On the debuts of Dawkins, McLoughlin and Ampaipitakwong:

They did great. I thought Ellis made some quality runs. Simon is a lad we picked up from Tottenham Hotspur and looked good. He searched for the ball and ran with it. He's a clever player, and Ampai came on and did fine too. Our depth looks good.
EARTHQUAKES FORWARD CHRIS WONDOLOWSKI

Thoughts on game:
“I take the blame for this loss. I had three perfect balls just sitting there and I missed them all. It’s frustrating. It’s one of those situations where I needed to do better on. I think the team played well. We pressed at times. It was a tough loss. It’s going to haunt me for a while. It was just one of those games where it didn’t go your way”.
On weather elements:

“I think the weather conditions played a role in the game. The weather was bad and it made the ball really slick, especially the wind. It was pretty hard to get the ball down play. It was unpredictable”.
EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER SIMON DAWKINS

On Earthquakes debut:
“It went well. When I was on the bench, I was looking for opportunities where we could expose the ball. I figured if I ran with the ball at midfield, I could create some chances. And that’s what I did. We had a few more chances, but just couldn’t take them. It was a little disappointing”.

EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER ANTHONY AMPAIPITAKWONG

On MLS debut:

“I had butterflies. I was so thrilled to be on the field, especially in a situation where I was put on to try to help the team get back in the game. We just couldn’t finish our chances. We have to put that behind us now and look forward to Dallas”.

Earthquakes to Again Broadcast Games on Radio in Both English and Spanish for 2011 Season

KDOW and KTRB to air games in English; La Kaliente to broadcast all games in Spanish

SAN JOSE, California - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today their English and Spanish language radio broadcast partners for the 2011 season. KZSF 1370 AM “La Kaliente” will increase their broadcasts to cover all games in Spanish after airing only home games in 2010. The Quakes will split time between KDOW 1220 AM and KTRB 860 AM in English. The Earthquakes local television broadcast schedule will be announced later this week.

“We continue to grow our broadcast network every season,” said Earthquakes President David Kaval. “We are happy to work with KDOW again and look forward to our first season on KTRB. One of our goals in the offseason was to increase our presence in Spanish and, for just the second time in team history, we will offer every game to our Spanish-language listeners.”

In English, the Quakes will air 19 games on KTRB 860 AM and 13 games on KDOW 1220 AM. KTRB is also the home of the Oakland Athletics. The Quakes will be on KDOW for the third straight season.

XTRA Sports 860 AM is a 50,000-watts station based in San Francisco, providing quality game coverage for Earthquake fans in all local counties, with a signal comparable to any station in the Bay Area.

As the only 24-hour business news format station in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1220 KDOW offers a dynamic body of content that is both timely and relevant to today’s uncertain economic conditions. With expert financial advice from programmers like Ray Lucia, Moe Ansari and Phil Grande, along with hourly business updates from Bloomberg and CNBC News, KDOW is a salient choice for the most intelligent and reliable financial news information heard on the radio today. Listeners from all over the Bay Area tune into KDOW to find answers related to retirement, wealth preservation, small business development, and the ever-changing stock market. All this makes KDOW your number one place for all local, national and international business news.

John Shrader will serve as the primary radio voice of the Earthquakes in 2011 and will be joined in the booth by Jim Kozimor for games that also air on television. Shrader has been the voice of the Earthquakes (Clash) either on radio or television since 1996. He has been a broadcaster in the Bay Area for over 30 years. He currently teaches journalism and media at San Jose State University. Prior to his current duties, he spent 15 years at all-sports station KNBR 680 AM, where he hosted talk shows and covered the San Francisco 49ers. Shrader broadcast the 2002 & 2003 MLS All-Star Games and the 2002 and 2003 MLS Cup Finals on the radio.

The Earthquakes return to KZSF for the second straight season and will air all games on the station for the first time. The Quakes aired home games only in Spanish on “La Kaliente” during the 2004, 2005 and 2010 seasons. KZSF is a locally owned Spanish language station that hosts daily sports talk shows and also plays a wide variety of popular music.

“We are excited to broadcast all the San Jose Earthquakes games this season,” KZSF Owner and General Manager Carlos Duharte said. “We are proud to partner with an organization like the Earthquakes. We have a great relationship with the team and we are glad to provide Earthquakes soccer to the local Hispanic community.”
