Earthquakes Rally From Two-Goal Deficit to Draw Real Salt Lake 3-3 in Second-Half Stoppage Time

The San Jose Earthquakes rallied from a two-goal first-half deficit to tie Real Salt Lake 3-3 in the club’s MLS opener on Saturday at a sold-out Buck Shaw Stadium.

Honduran center back Victor Bernardez provided the spark with a pair of second-half goals, the latter of which came in the 95th minute. The Earthquakes now have 17 second-half stoppage-time goals in all competitions since 2012, 15 of which have been of the game-tying or game-winning nature.

Chris Wondolowski put San Jose on top early with a close-range finish from his thigh. Shea Salinas whipped a free kick into the box where Bernardez flicked the ball toward goal and right in front of Wondolowski, who calmly directed a shot past Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

Real Salt Lake came roaring back with three straight goals. The first was a blast from long range via Kyle Beckerman. RSL’s captain struck his shot from 30 yards out with his left foot, banging it off the post and in.

Joao Plata was the next RSL player to find the scoresheet, working a give-and-go with Luis Gil in the area. Plata fed Gil, who returned the pass to Plata on a horizontal run across the box. Plata whiffed his first attempt, but collected and fired to the near post to make it 2-1.
Offseason signing Luke Mulholland capped the scoring for RSL with a put-back attempt from close range in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage. Ned Grabavoy tried his luck from just inside the box, but Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch punched the ball away. Unfortunately for Busch, Mulholland found the blocked shot first and fired from the doorstep to give the visitors a 3-1 advantage.

San Jose head coach Mark Watson altered the game plan at halftime and inserted Alan Gordon and JJ Koval into the match in the 63rd minute. As a result, the Quakes peppered RSL with 17 shots in the second half, seven of which were on target. The Earthquakes out-shot Real Salt Lake 27-12 on the night.

Bernardez pulled one back in the 75th minute, smashing a header past Rimando. Salinas picked up the assist with another set piece, this time providing service from a corner kick. Bernardez wriggled himself free at the near post and powered his shot into the net for his first goal of the season.

The Honduran national teamer scored the game-tying goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Shaun Francis sent a high-arching cross into the mix, forcing Rimando to try and bat the ball away from trouble. However, Rimando wasn’t able to send the ball where he wanted thanks to pressure from Gordon. Bernardez was the benefactor, taking one touch before booting his shot to the lower corner.

The Earthquakes will hit the road for their next two matches, the first of which is a decisive second leg against Deportivo Toluca FC in CONCACAF Champions League. San Jose enters the game tied at 1-1 with Toluca FC holding an advantage thanks to their away goal. Toluca FC hosts the Quakes on Wednesday, March 19 at Nemesio Diez Stadium with kickoff at 5 p.m. PT on FOX Sports 2 and Univision Deportes Network.

San Jose’s next MLS match is Saturday, March 22 against defending MLS Cup champion Sporting Kansas City. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet Plus, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH MARK WATSON

On the result:
“That’s kind of standard stuff around here, isn’t it? Once again, we had a great start. It was disappointing to see the game seemingly slip away from us. We got a bit sloppy and dug ourselves a big hole, but once again, our guys found a way to push to the end and get a point out of the game.”

On conceding a goal before halftime:
“The heads were down. It’s your home opener, you get off to a great start, the team had a lot of energy; to concede three goals and one just before halftime, the heads were down. It was a matter of sorting ourselves out on the field and making sure the heads were back up when we went back out there. We wanted to start the second half with energy and fight and a belief that we could still get something out of this game.

On opponent:
“They’re a good team and keep possession. There’s a couple things we needed to do better. They had too much time on the ball. Kyle Beckerman is a big part of what they do, and we gave him too much time on the ball. We knew we needed to sort that out for the second half or we would have had no chance to get something out of the game.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER SAM CRONIN

On second half adjustments:
“I think it was our energy. We just weren’t as focused in the first half. We were taking too long to organize ourselves to defend, which gave them too much time on the ball. We will take the tie. It’s good to get the point, but we have some things to work on.”

On defensive effort:
“We played with a makeshift backline for most of the game. When Jason [Hernandez] went out, we played with only three in the back; Khari [Stephenson] and I were sitting in the midfield with one in the back and the other in front. They continued to sit off of the ball to preserve their lead, which gave us more time on the ball to shift it wide or play it in the box.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES DEFENDER VICTOR BERNARDEZ

On stoppage time equalizer:
“It was a corner that [Alan] Gordon flicked my way with his head. I anticipated the ball bouncing my direction, so I adjusted my body to play the deflection. I am just blessed to have been put in a position today to score two goals which my team absolutely needed to get a tie at home.”

On match:
“Tonight we realized the caliber of the opponent we were facing. I didn’t feel that we were sharp enough in the first half as they beat us to every ball and scored three goals. At halftime, our coaching staff made their adjustments to the offensive approach and thankfully it worked for us to get a draw.”

On injuries to the defensive unit:
“We struggled mightily in the first half surrendering those three goals, but I can’t blame those on our injuries. Instead, we tightened up as a team and you saw a stingy defensive effort in the back line. I can’t say enough about the men who stepped up on defense tonight.”

On upcoming match at Toluca:
“We are ready for that match. We are confident in our play and really felt we could have won tonight and the first leg against Toluca. The key is finding how to play well over 90 minutes against a strong Toluca team that is already in midseason form.”

ERISLANDY "THE AMERICAN DREAM" LARA ELEVADED TO WBA WORLD CHAMPION

ERISLANDY "THE AMERICAN DREAM" LARA
ELEVADED TO WBA WORLD CHAMPION

HOUSTON, TX (March 13, 2014) - Super Welterweight sensation, Erislandy "The American Dream" Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs) has been elevated to World Champion by the WBA (World Boxing Association) after successfully defending his interim title against Afredo Angulo (22-4, 18 KOs) and Austin Trout (26-2, 14 KOs).  The Cuban born fighter, who now resides in Houston, Texas, is happy that the WBA has made their decision to make him a World Champion.

"I applaud the WBA for their decision to make me a world champion and I want to send a special thank you to a good friend of mine Gilberto Mendozafrom the WBA," said Erislandy Lara. "I've never had anything come easy to me.  I've fought everyone that has been offered to me with no hesitation.  All I want is an opportunity to prove I'm the best fighter in the division.  I've worked my entire life to become a world champion and now the dream has come true.  I'm truly living the American Dream and I love this country that I now call home."

Lara can arguably be referred to as an undefeated fighter, but was robbed in his only loss on record, a controversial majority decision debacle againstPaul Williams, that forced the New Jersey State Athletic Commission to suspend all three judges scoring that night for their incompetent judging.

With the elevated status of WBA World Champion, Lara feels his career is heading in the right direction.  He wants to challenge the best fighters in the world and knows what it's going to take to get those fighters in the ring.

"It's no secret that I would like to challenge the likes of Canelo Alvarez,Floyd Mayweather, Gennandy Golovkin and any other top fighter that feels they are the best.  I'll fight anyone.  I'm going to keep working hard and do my best to keep winning fights.  Boxing should be about the best fighting the best.  If we were back in the old days of Sugar Ray Robinson and Joe Louis, all these fights would have been made already.  I'm hoping boxing resurrects itself to the days when the best fought the best. I love this sport and I will do what ever it takes to make it better for the fans." Lara concluded.

Earthquakes Draw Toluca FC 1-1 After 95th Minute Equalizer from Alan Gordon

The San Jose Earthquakes drew 1-1 with Deportivo Toluca FC in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinal on Tuesday at Buck Shaw Stadium thanks to a 95th-minute header from Alan Gordon.

The Earthquakes had most of the chances on the night, outshooting their guests 20-10 with a 12-3 advantage in shots-on-goal. However, it was Toluca FC who found the scoreboard first thanks to mis-clear in the back by San Jose in the 67th minute. Toluca FC appeared as if they would take a 1-0 lead into the second leg, but Gordon broke free on a set piece from Shea Salinas, snapping his header into the ground and past Diablos Rojos goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera.

San Jose nearly opened the scoring midway through the first half when Steven Lenhart sent a powerful header on target after a Salinas corner. His shot was destined for the net, but a Toluca FC defender cleared it off the line.

Chris Wondolowski had a golden chance in the 55th minute when Cordell Cato targeted him on a counter attack. Cato stole the ball near midfield, dribbled into the attacking third and looped a cross that Wondolowski volleyed on the run, but Toluca FC goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera came off his line to make a diving save.

Talavera robbed Wondolowski again six minutes later. Brandon Barklage sent a long throw into the box, Lenhart flicked to the back post and Wondolowski one-timed a shot that Talavera pounced on.

Toluca FC broke the deadlock in the 68th minute after a turnover sprung Raul Nava free on goal. Nava didn’t hesitate, firing off the bounce to beat Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch with a brilliant finish to the far upper corner.

Lenhart almost tied the game late, pounding a Salinas pass into the crossbar in the closing minutes. The Quakes fired twice more from point-blank range only to have the first shot deflect off a Toluca defender and the next batted away from the ground by Talavera.

Gordon provided the dramatic finish five minutes into second-half stoppage time, nodding home his first career CONCACAF Champions League goal. His tally extended the club’s home-unbeaten streak to 20 games in all competitions.

The Earthquakes will complete their series against Toluca FC on Wednesday, March 19 at Nemesio Diez Stadium. Kickoff is 5 p.m. PT on FOX Sports 2 and Univision Deportes Network. In order to advance, San Jose will need to win or draw by a score of at least 2-2. They can also tie Toluca FC 1-1 to force overtime and penalty kicks, if necessary.

The Earthquakes open their MLS regular season on Saturday, March 15 against Real Salt Lake at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF. The match is presented by Visa with 10,000 fans receiving a special “For Club and Country” poster.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH MARK WATSON

 On positives from the result:
“I thought overall it was a good performance. I thought overall we deserved more after 90 minutes and the chances that we created. I think there are a ton of positives that we can take forward into Saturday’s [home opener against Real Salt Lake].”

On Alan Gordon:
“He had offseason surgery so he got started late and he’s still not fully match fit, but Alan’s the type of guy who can join the game at any moment and have an impact. He did just that tonight. He’s a strong player, holds the ball up well, he’s smart, and allows us to attack the final third. I thought he had a great impact on the game when he came on.

On chances created:
“We’re playing against a very good team tonight. They possessed the ball well, they have technical players, so we knew it was going to be a challenge. We knew that we were going to have to take the opportunities that we created. It was just one of those nights. I felt bad for the guys because I thought we deserved more.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES DEFENDER JASON HERNANDEZ

On result:
“We had a lot of chances, but the ball just wouldn’t go in. We were very fortunate to have Alan [Gordon] back and healthy to get us the draw. It feels like they [Toluca FC] only had one dangerous chance all night and it was when they scored. Most teams would feel defeated after giving up that goal, but we never quit. We have to dust ourselves off, believe that we can compete with this team and get ready for the next leg in Toluca.”

On second leg:
“If we are organized and disciplined, it gives us a better chance to keep them from scoring. Moving forward we need to continue to create chances; that’s our best bet to win. Hopefully we are a little more fortunate in their final third [in Toluca] than we were tonight.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FORWARD ALAN GORDON

On equalizer:
“I made a play on a great ball by Shea [Salinas]. I kept my eye on the ball and as it got closer I knew I had a chance to win it in the air and put it on frame. They are a tough team to break down and so many other guys should have scored. I was just lucky to get enough on the ball for the goal.”

On team’s scoring chances:
“We had our opportunities tonight which, were lacking last season. On another night, those maybe go in and you have a good cushion and the lead at home. Our offensive performance tonight usually results in a win. If those chances can carry over in the second leg, we have a reasonable chance to advance.”

REDWOOD CITY, CALIFORNIA- IBA Super Flyweight Champion, Bruno Escalante (12-1-1, 6 KOs), will defend his title against Victor Ruiz (12-2, 9 KOs) Saturday April 5, 2014, at the Cache Creek Casino Resort in Brooks, California. The 10-round bout will be the main event attraction of the evening.

After making his 2014 debut a few weeks ago, a non title bout where de destroyed Lorenzo Trejo in one round, Escalante now faces his most dangerous opponent to date in Ruiz. A focused Escalante, who resides in Redwood City California by way of Cebu, Philippines, knows he's in a tough fight, but feels confident he'll come out victorious.

"Ruiz has a lot of power so I will have to be very alert with every punch he throws, said Escalante."These are the type of fights that bring out the best in me.  I've worked really hard to get to this point and I'm not going to fail.  I'm going to dictate the tone of this fight and show Ruiz that I mean business."

Ruiz, of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, has won nine of his last ten bouts.  His most recent win came against Jaime Diaz, back in September of 2013.  Although he hasn't faced the level of competition that Escalante has, Ruiz promises to bring the fight to Bruno.

"Escalante has never been in the ring with a fighter like me." said Victor Ruiz. "I'm going to go right at him and bring a lot of pressure.  I'm always going for the knockout and if I have Escalante hurt I'm going for the kill.  I'm going to make it a war!"

Escalante is riding a 7-fight winning streak.  His confidence is at an all time high as he looks to continue on his path to a major payday.  A win against Ruiz will get him closer to a big-time fight.

"I have dreams of making it to the top," Escalante continued. "A victory against a tough opponent like Ruiz will get me one step closer to that big fight.  My trainers Brian Schwartz and Mike Bazzel have a nice game plan that I will execute.  I'll be ready for anything Ruiz brings.  The time is now to step up my game and take my career to the next level."
