Oakland Youth Art Exhibit: The A’s will showcase the Joyce Gordon Youth Art Alliance exhibit “Aerosoul” in the Westside Club of the Coliseum during A’s home games from May 27 through June 1. The Joyce Gordon Youth Art Alliance, led by Joyce Gordon and assisted by artist Senay Dennis, mentors and cultivates young Oakland artists. The exhibit’s opening night, Friday, May 27, is free to fans with a game ticket to that night’s A’s vs. Orioles game, and features appearances by the Oakland student artists.
MLB Play Sun Smart: A’s pitcher Dallas Braden has teamed up with Major League Baseball, the MLB Players Association and the American Academy of Dermatology as the 2011 spokesperson for Play Sun Smart, a program that provides information on sun safety and raises awareness of the importance of skin cancer prevention and detection. Braden lost his mother to melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, during his senior year of high school. Prior to the game Friday, May 27, Braden will accept the Play Sun Smart trophy commemorating his participation in honor of his mother and will be joined by his grandmother, Peggy Lindsey, Play Sun Smart volunteer dermatologist, Dr. Jason Fung, and A’s head athletic trainer, Nick Paparesta.
A’s Post-Game Fireworks Show:
After the game on Saturday, May 28 against Baltimore, fans will be invited down to the field to watch the A’s first fireworks show of the season. The fireworks show, which is set to the theme of “The King of Pop, Michael Jackson,” is presented by XFINITY.

Celebrity Ceremonial First Pitches: On Saturday, May 28, Dr. Ana María Polo, host of renowned Telemundo show, “Caso Cerrado,” will throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the game. Dr. Polo’s television show is the first Spanish-language program nominated for a Daytime Entertainment Emmy Award and the show is currently ranked as the number one Spanish-language program at 4:00 p.m. across key demographics. On Sunday, May 29, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe, members of the hit ‘90s R&B group Bell Biv DeVoe, will throw out the ceremonial first pitches of the game. Bell Biv DeVoe, whose three members branched off of the 1980s R&B group New Edition, released their debut album Poison in 1990, which was credited as pioneering the “New Jack Swing” sound of the early 1990s, combining hip-hop, funk, soul and pop music.
Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run Clinic: This spring, over 600,000 children have participated nationwide in Major League Baseball’s free Pitch, Hit & Run program. On Sunday, May 29 from 8:00-9:30 a.m., the top 12 boy and top 12 girl qualifiers from California and Nevada will compete on the field of the Coliseum in hopes of advancing to the National Finals at the 2011 MLB All-Star Game in Phoenix, Ariz.
A’s Post Game Radio Show Remote: The A’s post-game radio show, “A’s Talk,” which is carried on SportsRadio 95.7 FM, the new radio home of the A’s, will broadcast live on location from the Holiday Inn Oakland Airport Hotel (77 Hegenberger Road) on Wednesday, June 1. Fans are invited to join host Chris Townsend and A’s pitcher Craig Breslow after the game for the show, food and beverage specials and a chance to win prizes. “A’s Talk” is presented by Coors Light.
Homestand Highlights – Community Relations
TroopsDirect.org and Memorial Day Tribute: The Oakland A’s have partnered with TroopsDirect.org, a San Ramon-based nonprofit organization that works to raise awareness and funds to provide much-needed general necessities, such as toothpaste, bottled water and energy bars, to front-line troops exclusively at the Company and Battalion levels. TroopsDirect.org ships over ½ ton of goods overseas every week.
For those interested in donating to TroopsDirect.org, tables will be set up inside Gates C and D, and behind Section 120 throughout the game on Monday, May 30. Prior to the game, a video will be played to inform fans about TroopsDirect.org and how they can donate to support the troops. In addition, there will be a swearing-in ceremony for 10 United States Marine Corps poolees; a color guard performance by the United States Marine Corps of San Jose and the presentation of a large American flag in center field will be held by members of the Bay Area Military Personnel. A moment of silence will be observed and the stadium’s American flag will be raised by representatives of the United States Marine Corps of San Jose and flown at half mast for service members who have lost their lives in the line of duty. During batting practice and the singing of the National Anthem, A’s players will don U.S. Army patrol caps furnished by the Bravo Company Task Force 3/197th Field Artillery Solders, based at Camp Buehring in Kuwait. Immediately following the anthem, a military jet from Unit VFA-94, NAS Lemoore, Calif., will fly over the Coliseum. A first pitch video will be played of SPC Mark Braden, who is stationed in Kuwait, and on the mound Sergeant Dayton McConnell, who recently returned from a seven month combat deployment from the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines in Sangin, Afghanistan, will throw out the first pitch. Breaking Barriers:
In Sports, In Life: Prior to the game on Tuesday, May 31, the A’s will honor the Breaking Barriers: In Sports, In Life, essay contest winner, Morgan Dill, for her essay on overcoming a liver transplant. Earlier in the day, Dill will be visited by Jackie Robinson’s daughter, Sharon, in her fifth-grade classroom at Dairyland Elementary in Chowchilla, Calif. The Breaking Barriers Essay contest recognizes students for their efforts to overcome personal barriers using values exemplified by baseball great Jackie Robinson. The contest is a major component of Breaking Barriers: In Sports, In Life, a multi-curricular character education program developed by Major League Baseball and Scholastic, Inc.
Food Bank Wednesdays:
Beginning on Wednesday, June 1, the A's Community Fund will hold a food drive to benefit the Alameda County Community Food Bank before every remaining Wednesday home game. For every $5 donation or five cans of food donated at either Gates C and D or the BART Plaza entrance, fans will receive a certificate for one Plaza Level ticket to a specified future A's game (four certificate limit). A’s wives and significant others will meet fans at both gates and the BART Plaza Entrance from 11:05 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 1 to hand out A’s player photo cards and ticket vouchers for each canned food donation.
